The Dangers in My Heart: The Movie will hit North American theaters next week, and we had the chance to check it out through an early screening. The film opens with new scenes of Kyotaro reflecting on the idea of Primary COLOR’s upcoming performance as Kana prepares for it. For manga readers, it’s a rough adaptation of Chapter 114 “We’re Going Out” and Chapter 127 “We’re Moving Forward.” I say “rough” because it doesn’t exactly adapt them entirely, but parts of it are spread throughout the film.
After Kyotaro’s quick recollection of his current situation and how he actually helped write the lyrics for a song called “To Be Continued,” the film moves into a recap of the two TV seasons, dividing its time fairly evenly between Season 1 and Season 2. The final part then returns to the new material tied to the band’s performance and brings the story to an emotional close in perfect fashion.
The recap portion is handled well. Instead of feeling rushed or random, the key moments are arranged to show how Kyotaro and Anna’s relationship developed step by step. The tone is just as gentle and sincere, which has always been one of the series’ strengths. Even though we already know these scenes, seeing them presented together highlights how carefully the story was built and how far the two have come starting from their meeting and going to their confessions. Speaking of their confessions, you may want to rewatch those exact scenes in order for the song in the movie to be even more enjoyable.
Once again, the first and final several minutes are where the film offers something new. Without going into details (and not like there’s much to talk about there), this section does deliver a clear payoff that feels earned rather than just being dramatic for the sake of it. It has the awkward tone that defines the series and ends the movie on a satisfying note. The fact that we get to see the buildup of their entire relationship again makes it that much more satisfying.
Don’t Miss A Teaser of a Potential BokuYaba Sequel Anime
A fun potential teaser of a BokuYaba sequel is also shown very early on in the film. Within the first 3-4 minutes, as Kyotaro recaps what happened, he says that “a whole lot more happened” but that “we’ll save all that for some other time.” This includes several frames of content that happens between Chapter 114 and Chapter 127, and it certainly leaves us hopeful that they’re pieces of an upcoming sequel anime. These flash by quickly though, so make sure to be paying attention if you don’t want to miss them (featuring one of our favorite characters with a different hair color!)
Note that there has been no official mention of such a project at the time of writing.
Overall, I think the movie works best for fans who have followed both seasons. New viewers can understand the story through the recap, but the emotional impact is much stronger if you already know the characters. HIDIVE is bringing the film to North America on February 16 (subbed) and February 18 (English dub). If planning to attend, make sure to check the list of available theaters for your nearest location.
The anime is based on the manga written and illustrated by Norio Sakurai. Widely regarded by fans as “peak romance,” the manga currently has 13 volumes out and over 6.5 million circulating copies. It’s set to end with the next volume.
Anime Corner was provided an advanced screening of The Dangers in My Heart: The Movie for review. The TV series is available to watch on HIDIVE.
