Episode 7 of Lycoris Recoil aired on Saturday giving us a boat-load of information with no action this time around. While that might sound slow at first, the amount of information we learned, particularly what we learned, kept the episode interesting from beginning to end. After coming off the most action-packed episode of the series so far with episode 6, this week’s episode managed to cool everything down while also uplifting the series’ drama in the best ways possible.
Director Shingo Adachi’s ability to keep the viewers interested in every episode has been second to none compared to the rest of the Summer 2022 lineup and episode 7 showcased this perfectly. Despite the lack of action, the shocking reveals this episode gave us kept the series going at its consistent pace. Having teased Chisato’s past in previous episodes, Lycoris Recoil finally gave us a big bombshell of a reveal this week.
While it could be said that the closer we got to the reveal of Yoshi being involved with Chisato’s artificial heart, the more we realized who the signs were pointing to. But that never once deterred the reveal in any way this episode. The disappointment on Mika’s face, the sadness on Chisato’s, and the anger on Yoshi’s all were very telling that this was information not meant for anyone else to know about.
But what got me the most about this moment wasn’t so much the reveal. It was what happened after the fact. While on the surface it could be said that Chisato seems perfectly fine, her tone talking to Mika at the bar and her tardiness to work the next day is very telling. And it left me with a sort of uneasiness that Chisato is starting to harbor some sort of resentment towards Mika and Yoshi. Not to mention, look at the pictures below of how Chisato and Majima both hold their Alan Institute necklaces. If that’s not an indication of what’s to come then I don’t know what is.
Majima, while being rather dormant this episode, still gave us arguably the biggest reveal at the very end of the episode. It always dawned on me how he was the only character to actually give Chisato a run for her money when it came to combat. And now that we know he was also one of the Alan Children, just like Chisato, it all makes sense.
The thing we need to remember is that all Alan Children have a “mission” to complete. And seeing as how Majima straight up said in a previous episode that his goal was to eliminate all Lycoris agents, it could come sooner rather than later if Yoshi is the one who started all of this in the first place. But that cold dark past around Chisato, Majima, and Yoshi is starting to take hold of the series and it’s only making Lycoris Recoil that much more interesting than it already was.
However, there are a few things we are still unaware of that we need to look forward to. One, what changed Chisato from a cold-blooded killer to a kind-hearted Lycoris? Two, why were they both there the day the Tower fell? Lastly, what is so important about the Enkuboku Tower that’s constantly been talked about throughout the series in little segments?
Could it be that Chisato is the only thing standing between Yoshi and his goal with whatever the Enkuboku Tower might hold? Well, only one way to find out—keep watching. And that’s the best part of the original anime series—everyone who watches it is in the dark guessing what is coming next.
