Sword Art Online has announced a countdown stream for the exact moment Kirito cleared the game, which was on November 7, 2024 at 14:55pm. Kirito’s journey began in 2022 in the Sword Art Online game, making it a huge year for SAO fans. A new original movie was announced in November 2022. Now they are going to celebrate the moment Kirito cleared the game as well, with the event planning to release commemorative goods and possibly some news on its ongoing projects.
Reki Kawahara originally wrote the Sword Art Online series as a web novel on his website from 2002 to 2008. ASCII Media Works acquired it and began publishing it as a light novel through their Dengeki Bunko imprint from April 2009, where it is still ongoing. It received 3 TV anime seasons, titled Sword Art Online (2012), Sword Art Online II (2014) and Sword Art Online: Alicization (2018-2020). The movie Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale was released in 2017 and was set between the events of the second and third TV seasons.
The spin-off series Sword Art Online: Progressive began in October 2012 and is also ongoing. It was adapted into two movies, Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night (2021) and
Sword Art Online Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night (2022).
Another one of the spin-offs is Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online, a light novel written by Keiichi Sigsawa and illustrated by Kohaku Kuroboshi. It began in December 2014 and is still ongoing, with a manga adaptation by Tadadi Tamori launching in 2015. It also has an anime adaptation, which is currently airing its 2nd season.
Sword Art Online has numerous other novel and manga adaptations, as well as movies and games. The latest game is Sword Art Online: Fractured Daydream, which launched last month.
