Review: This is a silly heartwarming, and adorable narrative that delves into the world of two youthful adolescents experiencing the enchanting sensation of love for the very first time. While it’s true that the realm of shoujo manga boasts a plethora of tales on this theme, the sheer charm of this particular story never fails to induce the kind of mirthful laughter reminiscent of one’s teenage years. And as an unlikely friendship begins between the two, she’s given an ultimatum: he’ll say yes when his heart leans 100% towards her! A goofy, assertive romantic comedy! (Kodansha US)

Review: Prepare for a rollercoaster of laughter and emotions in this romantic tale featuring one of the most uproarious female leads I’ve ever encountered. The secondhand embarrassment I experienced while reading this story was nothing short of epic. The main character’s antics and predicaments had me in fits of laughter, and I couldn’t help but empathize with her most endearingly.

Let’s talk about our male lead, who embodies the classic tsundere archetype. His character development is impeccable, and it’s refreshing to note that this story doesn’t rely on a convoluted love triangle or unnecessary melodrama to keep things interesting. While the childhood friend and Aya appear, they play supporting roles without overshadowing the central narrative.

Despite being a mere 30 chapters long, the ending left me thoroughly satisfied. It tied up loose ends and provided that warm, fuzzy feeling only a well-executed romance can offer. What sets this story apart is its ability to blend a well-structured plot with heartwarming shoujo elements that will undoubtedly make your heart flutter. If you’re a fan of love, laughter, and heartwarming stories, this one will have you yearning for more with every panel.

Synopsis: University student Umi Asagi receives gifts and confessions from a stranger named Kamibukuro-kun, who hides behind a paper bag. Unbeknownst to everyone, Umi appreciates Kamibukuro-kun’s gestures and misses him. When Umi faces a difficult situation, will Kamibukuro-kun return to help her?

Review: I must say, Kamibukuro-kun wa Koishiteru is an absolute serotonin booster! It doesn’t beat around the bush, delivering short, easy-to-digest chapters that keep you grinning from ear to ear. This manga oozes wholesomeness and sweetness, making it impossible not to smile every few minutes.

Sure, there’s a dash of drama towards the end, but fear not; it’s not obnoxious. The real charm here lies in its unique storyline, revolving around a man who dons a paper bag over his head. This isn’t your normal rom-com; it’s something refreshingly different.

As you dive into its panel, you’ll find yourself experiencing a whole new perspective on life. It’s a testament to how even the smallest changes can bestow people with newfound courage. Some choose to hide behind their bangs, like Kyoutarou and Ishigami, while others, like Kumakura-san, opt for masks to boost their social interactions. It’s a captivating exploration of how we all have our unique ways of finding confidence, and this silly heartwarming manga encapsulates it beautifully.

Trust me, you won’t be able to resist grinning like a complete and utter fool as you devour this enchanting story. Kamibukuro-kun wa Koishiteru is a delightful departure from the norm that’s bound to leave you with a heartwarming, newfound outlook on life.

Lovesick Ellie by Fujimomo

 © Fujimomo / Kodansha Ltd.

Synopsis: Eriko Ichimura spends her high school days in complete obscurity. Her sole hobby is staring at handsome, smooth-spoken Akira “Omi-kun” Ohmi, and tweeting her daily fantasies under the screen-name “Lovesick Ellie.” One fateful day, she accidentally bears witness to Omi-kun’s true self—and if that weren’t enough, he sees her mortifying Twitter, too! Follow along with a plain, perverted girl, a two-faced boy, and their curious romance! (Kodansha US

ReviewLovesick Ellie was the first romance manga series I physically bought last summer! I can only describe it as one of the most side-splitting romantic comedies I’ve ever had the joy of reading. The female lead in this manga is an absolute riot, arguably one of the most uproarious characters I’ve come across in the realm of shojo manga. While the plot might tread familiar shojo territory with its foreseeable outcome, it’s the dynamism and antics of the two main characters that kept me glued to the pages from start to finish.

In one delightful, laugh-inducing marathon session, I devoured this manga; my chuckles resonated with each panel. This manga embodies the quintessence of what I’ve come to expect from the majority of shojo romance stories – an abundance of heartwarming romantic moments that I wholeheartedly adore. However, what sets this manga apart is its clever omission of the unnecessary dramatic flair. It avoids veering into the realm of overwrought melodrama, which, in my opinion, would have watered down its brilliance. Instead, it remains consistently entertaining, celebrating the pure, unadulterated charm of its two central characters.

The moments shared between the main character, Eriko (aka Ellie), and the male lead, Ohmi, are so endearingly cute that they’re bound to leave you grinning like an absolute goof. As the story unfolds, a few other characters make appearances, adding layers to the narrative. Ellie, while undeniably a pervert, is an utterly lovable and exceptionally humorous character. Her evolution throughout the manga, and the growing bond between her and Ohmi is a pure joy to witness. Their relationship, a delightful spoiler I won’t give away, embodies sweetness, complete with the various stages of a real relationship and the obstacles they must conquer together.

Sweet & Tart Boyfriend by SK Hoshimi

© SK Hoshimi / Manga Up! Global

Synopsis: My obstinate boyfriend always has a sharp tongue, and yet he pampers me. Living with a boyfriend like him fills my life to the brim with surprise and joy. A super popular rom-com about a sweet-tart boyfriend! (Manga Up!)

Review: After a long dive into more intense and disaster-prone narratives, reading this manga feels like a breath of fresh air. It’s a delightful change of pace not having to constantly fret about impending catastrophes.

My standards for romance in manga have evolved in a more grounded direction. I’m no longer seeking the stereotypical hot, wealthy, toxic type. Instead, I yearn for a significant other who genuinely cares about me, communicates openly, and makes me feel comfortable being my true self, free from constant worry.

If you appreciate fluffy, lighthearted romance with substantial character development, this is the perfect choice for you.

The central plot is refreshingly straightforward. It’s a story about a couple navigating their everyday life together without delving into deeper, dramatic, or hidden twists. You follow the main characters (along with a few charming side characters) as they interact in a heartwarming and endearing manner.

What sets this manga apart from others is the tangible sense of progression. Unlike many similar stories that tend to adopt an episodic nature, this one delivers a satisfying silly heartwarming journey of character growth.

Sweet & Tart Boyfriend finished with 54 chapters.

Author’s Spotlight: Kareshi no Koto ga Suki Sugite Kyou mo Zenryoku de Ikuru!!! by Merori and Neji Fukasawa

This manga is so sweet, silly, heartwarming, and short that it deserves the spotlight! This started as a 6 manga recommendation article, but I’d like to toss another one in as a surprise!

© Merori / Neji Fukasawa / Libre Shuppan

Synopsis: Merori’s most cherished treasure in the world is none other than her boyfriend, Haru. His maturity and kindness always manage to elicit a radiant smile from her. Whenever Haru returns home from work, Merori eagerly showers him with affection and words of admiration. Interestingly, Haru responds to her demonstrations of love with a calm demeanor. Surprisingly, this difference in their expressions of love doesn’t negatively impact their relationship.

Review: My standards were elevated as I delved deeper into the narrative of this silly heartwarming manga, particularly when I learned that the story was rooted in the author’s personal experiences in her current married relationship!
