Demon Lord, Retry! is getting a new anime project, titled Demon Lord, Retry! R, as announced earlier this week. Although not explicitly stated, this work appears to be a continuation of the 2019 Demon Lord, Retry! anime. The announcement states that “you can now meet Demon Lord again” and that further details will be revealed soon.
The anime is based on the Demon Lord, Retry! (Maou-sama, Retry!) light novel, written by Kurone Kanzaki. The novel was originally published under Futabasha’s Monster Bunko imprint with Koji Ogata’s illustrations. After three volumes, the novel was moved to M Novels, fully revised and published with new illustrations, this time by Makoto Iino. There are currently 8 volumes out.
A manga adaptation written by Kurone Kanzaki and illustrated by Amaru Minotake was ongoing in Gaugau Monster from 2017 to 2019. The sequel, titled Demon Lord, Retry! R, by the same artist, began in 2020. on the Web Comic Action platform. J-Novel Club licensed both manga and light novel in English and describes the plot as:
What do you do when the MMO you’ve run for 15 years comes to an end? Akira Ono didn’t get much of a choice — he woke up trapped inside the world of his own game in the body of his in-game character: the Demon Lord. With an outcast child as his sidekick, he tries his best to survive the cruel fantasy world of his own creation, prosecution from the good guys, and of course, the final boss.
Studio EKACHI EPILKA animated the Demon Lord, Retry! anime, under Hiroshi Kimura’s direction. It ran for 12 episodes and Crunchyroll is streaming it (originally it was Funimation) in select regions. Kenjiro Tsuda voiced the protagonist, Maou-sama/Hakuto.
