Japanese band EGOIST is ending its activities in the upcoming months. Final live events, EGOIST LIVE 2023 Fleeting Ruby ‘The Crescendo’ 0923 OSAKA and ‘EGOIST LIVE 2023 Resonant Indigo ‘Echoes of Everlasting’ 1009 YOKOHAMA’ will be held soon with more details to come. The duo, consisting of songwriter Ryo of Supercell and vocalist Chelly, was originally formed in 2011 with the goal of creating music for Guilty Crown anime. Ryo announced (on his private blog) that he would no longer be composing songs for the project in April and that he has been wanting to step down for quite some time. Chelly will continue as a solo artist Reche.
EGOIST shares the name with a fictional band from the Guilty Crown anime – Ryo was composing the music for the series and was looking for a vocalist for the role of Inori Yuzuriha and Chelly was selected. Their debut single “Departures (Anata ni Okuru Ai no Uta)” came out in November of 2011. It was also the anime’s ending theme song. Throughout their career, they continued focusing on anisongs.
In addition to Guilty Crown, they did the theme songs for Fate/Apocrypha (Eiyuu Unmei no Uta), Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress (the opening theme song shares the title with the series), and the PSYCHO-PASS franchise (Namae no Nai Kaibutsu, All Alone With You, Fallen). Their songs appeared in the PSYCHO-PASS movies as well, sometimes remixed. Most recently, they performed the opening theme song for Build Divide: #FFFFFF – Code White, titled “Gold.”
Their most recent single, titled “Toujisha” came out on May 10. It was the ending theme for the newest PSYCHO-PASS movie, Providence.
Ryo is a well-known name among anime fans. In addition to EGOIST, he also worked on multiple anime titles such as Kakegurui, Monogatari, takt op.Destiny, and more.
