Bushiroad Co., Ltd. announced that a ‘full-fledged’ Hunter x Hunter fighting game is in development in collaboration with game developers Eighting. The statement made on December 16 reads:
“Bushiroad Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Nakano City, Tokyo, President and CEO: Takaaki Kidani, hereinafter referred to as Bushiroad) is pleased to announce that it has decided to produce a full-scale fighting game of “HUNTER x HUNTER. In addition, we will announce follow-up information to this title at the Bushiroad Games section of the “Bushiroad New Year’s Presentation 2024” to be held at TOKYO DOME CITY HALL on Saturday, January 6, 2024.“
While fans will have to wait until January 6 for more information on the Hunter x Hunter game, they can likely expect it to be a console game. Bushiroad just recently put out their first console game Rear Sekai on October 12, 2023, under their new Bushiroad Games label. Cause for excitement may be tempered by a report from Automaton Media in November, revealing that the game was low quality, with criticisms over its low $650,000 budget, reused lines, and poor balance regarding difficulty settings.
The unnamed Hunter x Hunter fighting game follows recent releases and announcements of other high-profile Shonen titles, including Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero developed by Spike Chunsoft, NARUTO X BORUTO Ultimate Ninja STORM CONNECTIONS by CyberConnect2 Co., Ltd., and One Piece Odyssey (ILCA, Inc.), with all three published by Namco Bandai.
Hunter x Hunter is one of the best-selling manga of all time, with over 84 million sales across 37 volumes. The manga by Yoshihiro Togashi has inspired two critically acclaimed anime series, the latter of which is hailed as a masterpiece. 2024 looks to be a promising year for Hunter x Hunter fans, with notable activity from Togashi in recent months. A possible ending to the Hunter x Hunter manga in the event of his death was revealed last month and he released artwork for the Fist of the North Star exhibit in the same month. This all followed his ‘Start Over’ post with an image of his drawing setup.
