Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Earns Over $20 Million During Opening Weekend

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie, the prequel to the popular anime series, earned over 2.68 billion JPY – which is around 23.5 million USD. The movie was screened in 418 theatres in Japan and attracted over 1.9 million viewers. The movie opened on December 24.

This also makes the movie the second-biggest opening weekend, just one place behind Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Mugen Train movie.

Studio MAPPA animated the movie, while Park Seong-Hu’s directed. The same director also worked on the TV anime series. Tadashi Hiramatsu did character designs, with Junichi Higashi as the art director. The movie previously revealed a key visual and trailer, most recent of which came during Jump Festa ’22:

The story is based on a prequel manga by Gege Akutami. The manga consists out of 4 chapters, compiled into 1 volume. The serialization lasted from April 28, 2017, to July 28, 2017, while the volume came out in 2018. A novel adaptation of the movie is also available.

Yuta Okkotsu is a nervous high school student who is suffering from a serious problem—his childhood friend Rika has turned into a Curse and won’t leave him alone. Since Rika is no ordinary Curse, his plight is noticed by Satoru Gojo, a teacher at Jujutsu High, a school where fledgling exorcists learn how to combat Curses. Gojo convinces Yuta to enroll, but can he learn enough in time to confront the Curse that haunts him?
