The previews for The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) episode 21 are out. It is titled “How To Buy Out A Contract” and will air on Saturday, March 2. The plot is summarized as follows:
With the possibility of consort Gyokuyou pregnant, Maomao once again returned to the Jade Palace to become her poison taster. On her way back from the quack doctor, Lihaku asks Maomao if she would like Pairin to be bought out. After hearing rumors that one of the three princesses of the Verdigris House will retire as a courtesan, Lihaku, who is madly in love with Pairin, becomes anxious and worried. Maomao then tells him to take his clothes off.

The Apothecary Diaries anime is based on a light novel series written by Natsu Hyuga, illustrated by Toko Shino, and published by Shunfunotomo. It has inspired two manga adaptations: a manga adaptation by the same name written by Itsuki Nanao and illustrated by Nekokurage and an alternative manga adaptation, The Apothecary Diaries: The Palace Cloister Mystery-Solving Notebook of Maomao (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: Maomao no Kokyu Nazotoki Techo) illustrated by Minoji Kurata. The manga adaptations were published by Square Enix and Shogakukan and serialized in Monthly GanGan and Sunday Gene-X, respectively.
The anime series is currently streaming on Netflix and Crunchyroll in select regions. Crunchyroll describes the plot as:
Maomao lived a peaceful life with her apothecary father. Until one day, she’s sold as a lowly servant to the emperor’s palace. But she wasn’t meant for a compliant life among royalty. So when imperial heirs fall ill, she decides to step in and find a cure! This catches the eye of Jinshi, a handsome palace official who promotes her.
