Japanese local police charged a 66-year old man with violation of copyright law after he was caught selling masks Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen masks. The prosecutor’s office received the case on October 21, Jiji Press reported.
Itabashi Police Station of Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department accused the part-timer of violating the copyright holders’ rights by replicating Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen characters without permission using his computer and printer from April 23 to July 16. He printed them on masks and sold them through an internet auction service. The man admitted the crime, saying many people would buy his masks with those popular characters. According to the local police, the 66-year-old collected around 1,700 pirated anime and manga images on his computer.
Both Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen have received anime adaptations that became popular all over the world.
Gotoge Koyoaharu’s Demon Slayer manga began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 2016. The manga ended in 2020 and has a total of 23 volumes. A successful anime adaptation began airing in 2019. Season 2 is currently ongoing.
