A new anime film adaptation for the Rakudai Ninja Rantaro series has been announced under the Dokutake Ninja-tai Saikyo no Gunshi title. The movie will be released in Japanese theaters in December this year. A teaser trailer and visual have been released as part of the announcement.
Ajia-do Animation Works (Ascendance of a Bookworm, A Sign of Affection), which animated the original Nintama Rantaro anime series, will work on this film adaptation. Masaya Fujimori is directing, with Kazuhisa Sakaguchi writing the script. The original main cast is also returning, which includes:
The Rakudai Ninja Rantaro manga series was written by Sobe Amako. The manga was serialized by the Asahi Shogakusei Shinbun magazine from 1986 to 2019 for 65 volumes. The original anime series, which started broadcasting in April 1993, continues to air as of this writing with over 3,000 episodes. The series also sprang two film adaptations: Eiga Nintama Rantaron in 1996 and Gekijo-ban Anime Nintama Rantaro Ninjutsu Gakuen Zenin Shutsudo! no Dan in 2011.
The plot centers on Rantaro, a teenage ninja apprentice who studies at a prestigious ninjutsu academy in ancient Japan. Several primary school pupils, referred to as “Nintama,” join him.
