Tengoku Daimakyo episode 7 gave us a deeper insight into the dark reality of the post-apocalypse world ridden with Man-eaters. Maru and Kiruko accept a job that lands them in danger and it almost ends up with them getting hurt due to the monsters’ terrifying powers.
It feels like every Tengoku episode just offers us new mysteries while giving us breadcrumbs. I’m all for it and we definitely got to learn some interesting things. The first one was the existence of Liviuman – an organization that fights the Immortal Order. It’s not that it was unexpected, but it turns out the Order is doing human experimentation and possibly something even more sinister. Maru and Kiruko sneak into their headquarters on a job and end up encountering a half-dead Man-eater who almost manages to kill Kiruko. Soon they see a mysterious man who introduces himself as Usami, a doctor Livium mentioned. He asks them to kill someone else for him and you have to wonder why, considering that he has a gun and is probably conducting experiments on humans.
This something is probably the chopped-up human Liviuman leader, Mizuhashi, saw. The thing is, if Usami and the Order created this creature then why is he looking to get rid of it? Both organizations seem suspicious and the job our duo accepted even had Maru questioning the true motives. Kiruko is still looking for the doctor from their past and it seems like they also miss Robin, who abandoned them. The bond between the two of them growing by the day and Maru isn’t giving up on making a move.
One thing that stood out, something that I haven’t paid much attention to, is the fact that Maru calls Man-eaters “Hiruko.” He heard it from his mentor and I’m sure anime fans are somewhat familiar with the legend of Hiruko (especially if you watched Summer Time Rendering). For those who are not: Hiruko, also known as Ebisu, was the first child of Izanagi and Izanami. According to the legend, he was born with bones, or in some versions limbs. The reason for this was his mother’s perceived sin: she spoke first during their marriage ceremony (which incidentally took place at Ame-no-mihashira – the tower of heaven). He is sometimes referred to as a “leech child.” Seeing the inactive Man-eaters solidifies the connection between this legend and the Heaven Maru is looking for. Sadly, we did not get to see how things at the hospital are progressing so no hints in that regard, at least until the next weekend.
I know I keep repeating myself, but if you’re looking for a good mystery definitely try Tengoku Daimakyo. The story and the animation are both top-notch and sure to deliver many amazing moments this season.
