Nintendo and Illumination’s popular The Super Mario Bros. Movie will receive a sequel, set with a release date of April 3, 2026, for the United States. The film will be co-produced by Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri, Nintendo representative director Shigeru Miyamoto, Aaron Horvath, and Michael Jelenic – the director of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Matthew Fogel will pen the screenplay. Check out the visual for the first film below:
The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 was announced on Mario Day 2024 (Mar10 Day 2024). Meledandri announced that storyboarding and set design for the movie were already underway, adding that they “start animation soon. And rest assured, we’ll be obsessing over every detail to ensure that we get it just right.” Also announced was the Paper Mario RPG‘s release date, set for May 23, 2024. The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s sequel comes as little surprise given its predecessor’s massive box office success. Released on April 5, 2023, The Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed over $1.3 billion against a budget of around $100 million. The box office is set to rise following AMC Theaters’ announcement of the film’s re-screenings from June 28, 2024, in the United States. (via GoNintendo).
