To Your Eternity Episode 14 — Death Happens

“To Your Eternity” episode 14 is out! Pioran and Fushi are tricked into the prison island, Jananda. The only way of escape is to win in the island’s deadly tournament. The episode is titled, “Jananda, The Island of Freedom.”

“To Your Eternity” episode 14 begins with the start of the “Last Man Standing” tournament. The show doesn’t shy away and delivers some pretty brutal scenes. (I was honestly taken by surprise.) Fushi becomes sick from feeling the pain and death all around. Fortunately, he wins the round by scaring the wits out of his competitor by being an immortal “wea-pin cushion.” (Ba-dum-tss.)

After winning, Fushi is suddenly becomes surrounded by a lot of interested people. We also finally discover the new characters’ names. They are Tonari, Uroy, Mia, Sandel, Oopa, and the three-toed owl, Ligurd. They take this chance to make a business out of Fushi as the future island chief.

Personally, I still don’t like Tonari because she has a sort of mischievous opportunist aura. Is this a front or is it really her personality? All the kids seem to have had a terrible life on the island, so we’ll have to wait and see how the story develops (or see their backstories soon.)

Tonari and the others take Fushi around the island. We discover that there are families, as well as prisoners living there. Killing is also a normal thing. It’s very unsettling that these kids have cheery dispositions in such a cruel and depressing place. It’s no wonder why Fushi becomes annoyed with them.

Perhaps the most interesting part of “To Your Eternity” episode 14 is the interaction between The Beholder and Fushi. When The Beholder pins Gugu’s death on Fushi, I literally shouted “FOUL!” However, The Beholder explains to Fushi that death happens to all mortals and that they make choices for how they want to live (and end) their lives. Thus, he should not carry the burden of the people he must fight in the tournament.

Then comes the creepy part where I cringed in horror. A woman sneaks up to a sleeping Fushi and… licks his face! Eugh. Apparently, she’s also in the tournament. Scarred face, dark blue hair, and Yanome clothes? I have my thoughts on who this crazy woman is. However, I did mention before that  I never wanted to see her ever again…

During Fushi’s second battle, he tries to convince his enemy to surrender. He also tries to cover himself with weapons. (Because “the best defense is offense!” Ha-ha.) Fushi transforms to his other vessels to scare his opponent. It’s not very effective as compared to the first time.

While still refusing to kill, the words “purpose of life and death” suddenly triggers a memory from a long time ago. He transforms into the person who said those words — Parona.

It’s Parona-neesan from Ninannah! It’s a thrilling moment in “To Your Eternity” episode 14. Fushi instantly wins the battle because of Parona’s agility. I was honestly very happy to see her again. However, I also can’t help but wonder …. does this mean that Parona is dead?

Fushi’s Internal Conflict

In this episode, Fushi gains two new vessels —a mole and Parona. His journey to power continues! Also, isn’t Kawashima Reiji’s performance as Fushi just awesome? His portrayal of Fushi’s emotions is amazing and I appreciate the voice changes so far in the journey.

I think it’s crazy parkour that Fushi went from seeing the best of humanity from March and Gugu to suddenly the worst of humanity in Jananda Island.  Death indeed awaits all mortal beings (like The Beholder said), but this orderless island gives it a whole other meaning. It’s sickening and disturbing to think how much “normal killing” there is. Honestly, I’m mad and sad for how cruel this prison is.

As always, “To Your Eternity” discusses deep and complex emotions. Fushi struggles to remain a pacifist while also wanting to achieve his goal of saving Pioran. Right now, I think Parona’s words, “It is wrong to seek meaning in another’s life and death” are really important. Fushi is clearly confused about his existence and of hurting others. He carries bits of his vessels’ knowledge with him. Maybe he’ll find the answers he seeks from Parona…?
