The information was teased on June 6 on the official accounts for the series and was revealed during a special stream. Director Yabuta, character designer Ahiru Takahito, and Thorfinn’s voice actor Yuto Uemura provided commentary:

Shuhei Yabuta, who worked on the first season, tweeted saying that the staff would be returning. Yabuta is currently working at MAPPA, although he directed the first season of Vinland Saga as a freelancer. He is best known as a CG director and he worked on titles such as Highschool of the Dead (MADHOUSE) and later on WIT Studio’s Attack on Titan.

Character designer, Takahiko Abiru, also shared a drawing and a comment for the upcoming second season:

Vinland Saga is based on a manga by Makoto Yukimura, initially published in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine. In late 2005 the manga moved to seinen magazine Afternoon, where it’s still being serialized. The story focuses on Thorfinn Karlsefni Thórdarson, who is given a sullen personality and revenge goal.

An anime adaptation by WIT Studio aired from July to December 2019 and had 24 episodes. The staff included:

  • Director: Shuhei Yabuta
  • Series composition: Hiroshi Seko
  • Character design: Takahiko Abiru
  • Chief animation director: Takahiko Abiru
  • Music; Yutaka Yamada
  • Script: Hiroshi Seko (24 episodes), Kenta Ihara (episodes 5-24)

Survive Said The Prophet and Man with a Mission performed the opening songs, titled “Mukanjyo” and “Dark Crow,” respectively. Aimer and Milet sang the ending themes – “Torches” and “Drown.”
