Love Live! franchise announced on Tuesday that Tomori Kusunoki, the voice actress of Setsuna Yuki and Nana Nakagawa, will step down from the roles as of March 31, 2023. Along with the announcement, messages from the voice actress and other cast members were posted.
The franchise states that the voice actress has been diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), which makes it difficult to have continuous live activities. They received her decision to step down from the roles and decided to accept it after a series of careful meetings. Tomori Kusunoki will terminate the activity of the Nijigasaki High School Idol Club as of March 31, 2023. However, her voice recorded for stories in the franchise’ app game Love Live! School Idol Festival ALL Stars will be available after the mentioned period.
The successor to the role is currently in the process of selection and will be announced once it’s decided. “The activity of Project Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club will continue on afterword, so we would appreciate your continued support for the Nijigaku members. Although Kusunoki-san will step down from the roles of Setsuna Yuki and Nana Nakagawa, the path of activity will remain in the future. We would like to, also as the project, offer our heartfelt wishes for her success and health.“
I’m sorry for surprising you with the sudden news.
For a long time I’ve been worried about whether this was the right choice… but everybody I watched on the monitor fom the backstage room were all sparkly, pretty, and cool. I thought I wanted to see them like that forever, and I want people to see them like that. So it was one of the decisive reasons. I want you all to keep letting Setsuna see a lot of sceneries with all your might! I’m counting on you!
Looking back again, I’m filled with the feeling of gratitude for everybody having been kindly supporting me in any situation. It made me super happy when I was asked to go for a meal together again sometime! Thank you so much!! Sure, let’s go!! I love you all.

Other than Setsuna Yuki and Nana Nakagawa in the Love Live! franchise, Tomori Kusunoki played role of Misha Necron in The Misfit of Demon King Academy, among others. She is currently voicing Makima in Chainsaw Man.
The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, one of 27 institutes and centers at the United States National Institutes of Health, describes the summary of the illness as:
Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) are a group of inherited connective tissue disorders caused by abnormalities in the structure, production, and/or processing of collagen. The symptoms of EDS vary by type and range from mildly loose joints to serious complications. Features shared by many types include joint hypermobility and soft, velvety skin that is highly elastic (stretchy) and bruises easily. Genetic changes in a variety of genes may lead to EDS. However, the underlying genetic cause in some families is unknown. Depending on the type, EDS may be inherited in an autosomal dominant or an autosomal recessive manner.
According to the organization, the disease “is estimated to be fewer than 5,000” in the United States.
