Blue Exorcist manga ended the 9-month hiatus with chapter 133 in June’s edition of Shueisha’s Jump Square magazine. The 133rd chapter is also out in English and is available to read on Shueisha’s Manga Plus platform. The last chapter before the hiatus came out on July 1, 2021, making this the first new chapter in 9 months. According to Manga Plus, the next chapter is set for June 2 release.
The Blue Exorcist (Ao no Exorcist) hiatus was caused by the author’s (Kazue Kato) exhaustion. The break was initially supposed to last 2 months but was extended. Kato at the time stated that the “12 years of exhaustion” culminated but insisted that it was not a health issue. Blue Exorcist characters are featured on the cover of June’s SQ magazine:
Blue Exorcist manga by Kazue Kato started serialization in Jump Square magazine in 2009. At the time of writing, 27 volumes are out. Viz Media licensed it in English, and as stated above, it is also available on Manga Plus. Spin-off manga Salaryman Futsumashi Okumura Yukio no Aishuu ran from 2013 to 2020, as well as a light novel that was published in Jump J Books from 2011 to 2017.
Manga Plus describes the plot as:
Raised by Father Fujimoto, a famous exorcist, Rin Okumura never knew his real father. One day a fateful argument with Father Fujimoto forces Rin to face a terrible truth–the blood of the demon lord Satan runs in Rin’s veins! Rin swears to defeat Satan, but doing that means entering the mysterious True Cross Academy and becoming an exorcist himself. Can Rin fight demons and keep his infernal bloodline a secret? It won’t be easy, especially when drawing his father’s sword releases the demonic power within him!
The series received an anime adaptation in the Spring 2011 anime season. However, it featured an anime original final arc (episodes 16-25). In 2012 a Blue Exorcist Movie movie also came out. Season 2 titled Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga aired in the Winter 2017 anime season and it ignored the anime original arc from the prequel and continued to adapt the manga’s storyline. Side-story titled Blue Exorcist: Kuro’s Trip Away From Home also exists, along with 2-episode OVA from season 2. Studio A-1 Pictures animated the whole franchise.
