Nijisanji’s Hyakumantenbara Salome on June 7 reached 1 million subscribers on YouTube. It’s been 13 days since she made her debut on the streaming platform on May 24, 2022. She is the 3rd VTuber to hit the milestone within the group.
The VTuber group announced the new member on May 21 without any advance notice and introduced her as “a common woman aspiring to be a real high-class lady. She has, by nature, the hair and manner of speaking.” Part of her name Hyakumanten shows her wish to be perfect, 100 out of 100, and also implies a huge number, 1 million.
She made her Twitter debut on the same date as her first tweet, a clear statement that she is not a high-class lady. Her presence on the platform has been growing as well as on YouTube, and as of the time of writing, she has received over 600,000 Twitter users.
Her debut stream shocked people with the content she used as a part of her introduction, which has shown her insides and outsides, quite literally. For instance, she showed parts of the endoscopy procedure she had taken in the past. Her digestive system was also shown, as well as the insides of her body. She warned her viewers on Twitter to censor clips and screenshots of the explicit content, avoid potential flagging for gore. The tweet continues to mention another objective: to make viewers interested in what Salome’s insides look like. The video has been viewed more than 3 million times.
As described above, the VTuber has characteristics of the so-called “Ojo-sama,” which translates into a high-class lady, from her appearance to her speech. What’s distinctive is the Ojo-sama language, an online Japanese meme. It’s not actually spoken among people of the upper class, but online users play the imaginary role they have. The perfect and explicit example is “ですわ (-desuwa)” at the end of the lines. You can find this expression in the title of her debut stream video.
Another typical uniqueness of the Ojo-sama language goes in the way the speakers add politeness to words. Japanese words, referring to native Japanese words and those of ancient Chinese origin, in this case, may stick to honorific prefixes “お(O)” or “ご(Go)” respectively, but what makes the difference here is the language lets speakers ignore the rules of the use, and it’s no exception to the VTuber.
Salome played Resident Evil 7 Biohazard, known as Biohazard 7 Resident Evil in Japan, developed and produced by Capcom, and her streams came with a title “おバイオ7 (O-bio 7).” It combines the prefix O and Bio of Biohazard, which can’t be seen in everyday Japanese.
On another note, the game’s official Twitter recognized the VTuber. On June 1, Salome tweeted her regret of not waiting for the franchise’s sale on Steam, and the next day, they reacted to her by replying in the Ojo-sama language to express their apologies and hopes for her to enjoy playing other Resident Evil series likewise. Salome then quote-tweeted it to express her excitement and surprise, calling them O-capcom-sama, and said she would love to do so and thanked them for the wonderful game.
The domestic Nijisanji group has about 150 talents, and two male VTubers, who also marked 1 million subscribers on YouTube before Hyakumantenbara Salome’s appearance. In September 2021, Kuzuha became the first male VTuber to make the milestone in the world. In May 2022. Kanae reached 1 million subscribers as the second Nijisanji-affiliated VTuber.
