Macross, a long-running mecha media franchise, is getting a new animation project by studio Sunrise. This announcement was made on the franchise’s official Twitter account. No other details on the staff and cast of the new project have been announced as of this writing.
The new Macross animation project comes days after the franchise had announced the concert finale for the franchise titled “‘”SANKYO presents Walküre FINAL LIVE TOUR 2023.” This concert was held across the cities of Tokyo, Osaka and Chiba in Japan.
Macross was first created in 1982 by Studio Nue and Artland. It started with the 1982 anime series The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, with Artland and Tatsunako Productions animating the series under the direction of Noburo Ishiguro. Akira Inoue and Hiroshi Iwata served as the series’ producers, with Kenichi Matsuzaki writing the script.
This further evolved into three more television series namely Macross 7, Macross Frontier, and Macross Delta. Moreover, several theatrical films have been released based on the franchise. Some of those movies include The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?, Macross 7 The Movie: The Galaxy Is Calling Me!, and Macross Frontier Movie: The Wings of Goodbye.
Macross’ franchise further spurred into several video series including Macross II, Macross Plus, Macross Dynamite 7, and Macross Zero; as well as manga series (Macross 7: Trash, Macross Frontier Manga, Macross: The First), novels, musicals, and games.
