Demon Slayer is still fast heading to being the highest grossing film of all time in Japan. According to the latest official information, it is now only behind Spirited Away and Titanic. It just surpassed the box office revenue of Frozen, as well as that of the famous Your Name anime film. Shortly after the announcement, the renowned director Makoto Shinkai commented on the Demon Slayer achievement, saying he feels ‘frustration’, but also that it’s a normal thing and that he’ll do his best to continue making good films.
The fully translated tweet reads (translation by Bushido Samurai):
Wow, already?! lol
I feel frustrated, but at the same time, I know it’s healthiness of the entertainment (industry) that records are constantly getting updated. I’ll keep on going every day in order to make nice movies as well.
Now there are only two more movies that have ever earned more in Japan. They are James Cameron’s Titanic, which earned ~26.2 billion yen, and Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away, which earned 30.8 billion yen. Demon Slayer is currently at ~25.9 billion, which means it’s definitely beating Titanic by next week!
