The anime will be created by Takashi Miike (The Blade of the Immortal, Terra Formars, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable Chapter I) as the chief director and Shinya Sugai (Shikizakura, Dragon’s Dogma) as the director at studio Sublimation. The main character Musashi Miyamoto was modeled after the late Toshiro Mifune.

CAPCOM developed and published the first Onimusha game for the Playstation 2 in January 2001. An updated version was released for the Xbox in 2002. Onimusha had seven other entries in the following years, while the latest one was an HD remaster of Onimusha: Warlors which released in 2019 for the Playstation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
