The Psycho-Pass anime franchise has released a special recap video ahead of the upcoming release of the Psycho-Pass Providence anime film, which will premiere on May 12. The 10-minute special video, narrated by Kana Hanazawa and Tomokazu Seki, recounts the history of the series, including many of the notable moments.
The first Psycho-Pass TV anime ran for 22 episodes from October 12, 2012 to March 22, 2013. It was produced by Production I.G. with direction by Naoyoshi Shiotani and Katsuyuki Motohiro. George Wada, Kenji Tobori, and Wakana Okamura served as producers, while Gen Urobuchi, Makoto Fukami, and Aya Takaha served as the screenwriters. Crunchyroll streamed the series, describing the plot as:
In the future, thinking about a crime makes you guilty, and justice is dispensed from the barrel of a gun. Detectives work in teams made up of Enforcers and Inspectors. Enforcers take out the bad guys, and Inspectors make sure their partners don’t cross the line. The equalizer in the war on thugs is the Dominator, a weapon that can tell when citizens are about to turn criminal.
It later received two anime sequels. Psycho-Pass 2 was produced by Tatsunoko Production. It aired from October to December 2014 and had 11 episodes. It was directed by Naoyoshi Shiotani and Kiyotaka Suzuki, with supervision by Katsuyuki Motohiro and Gen Urobuchi. Production I.G. then returned for Psycho-Pass 3, running for 8 episodes from October to December 2019 with Naoyoshi Shiotani as the director.
Prior to the Psycho-Pass: Providence anime film, there were three films before, namely Psycho-Pass: The Movie (2015), Psycho-Pass: Sinners of the System film trilogy (2019), and Psycho-Pass 3: First Inspector (2020). The 2019 film trilogy consisted of the films Case. 1 – Crime and Punishment, Case. 2 – First Guardian, and Case. 3 – Vengeance’s Horizon.
In addition to the TV anime and movies, the franchise also spawned multiple manga and light novel adaptations.
