The manga that the anime is based on has been ongoing since November 2017. It is written by Shinya Umemura and Takumi Fukui, while Ajichika handles the illustration. VIZ Media licensed it in English, and they describe the story:
Once every millennium, the gods assemble to decide if humanity is worthy of its continued existence or if it should be destroyed! When the verdict is destruction, the final battle between the gods and mortal heroes will decide the survival or extinction of the human race—a battle known as Ragnarok!
Season 2 of Record of Ragnarok will continue with Jack the Ripper against Hercules, and we’re sure to see some more interesting match-ups.
