Demon Slayer: Infinity Train is extremely close to becoming the highest grossing film of all time in Japan. The latest report after 59 days moved it to ~30.2 billion yen, which was ‘only’ about half a billion away from the top. The film waiting there is studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away, which was sitting on ~30.8 billion yen for a while. However, Toho has now updated it, adding about 880 million yen to the revenue of Spirited Away (~$8.5 million dollars).
The added revenue comes from theatrical screenings of Studio Ghibli films from July to August this year. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Princess Mononoke and Tales of Earthsea also updated. Princess Mononoke got 880 million and overtook Howl’s Moving Castle as the 4th highest grossing anime film of all time (7th highest grossing film). Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind got 730 million added, and Tales of Earthsea got 150 million.
After being updated, Spirited Away now sits at a revenue of 31.68 billion yen. That’s about 1.4 billion more than Demon Slayer, so it likely delayed it for another week. Still, it’s very likely that ufotable’s film will surpass it this year anyway.
