Spy x Family Episode 8 - Yor's Protective Brother

Spy x Family episode 8 officially introduces us to Yor’s younger brother, Yuri Briar! Another chaotic energy joins in on our secret-identity gang, and honestly, it’s such a blast watching how the events unfold. It’s amazing how the series is keeping up the momentum with its wholesome vibes and well-written characters. The “secret-identity” theme is established, but the happenings thrown together are ever interesting. We got a spy, an assassin, a telepath, and now, a member of the secret police. Waku-waku!

At the beginning of the episode, we get to see Anya’s development in her math skills. When Damian looks at her, I can’t help but imagine Damian’s shoujo manga point-of-view of Anya. Later on, we are caught up with Yor‘s dilemma of having to explain to her brother about her marriage. (Yor forgets that she is now a Forger, so basically, Yor Forget. Ha-ha.) Fortunately, Twilight is prepared for this visitor situation, all for the sake of Operation Strix.

Yuri Briar (voiced by Kensho Ono) is an Ostanian diplomat but is actually a member of the Secret Police. Despite his kind and calm demeanor, he is actually very cold and violent and will do all things necessary to get his job done. However, he also loves his sister so much that his sense of logic goes right out the window, which we saw in his interrogation, the humongous bouquet, and the quick forgiveness towards Yor. In addition, Yuri Briar, as a secret policeman and a brother, is naturally Twilight/Loid’s nemesis.

Personally, Spy x Family episode 8 was very amusing and pleasant to watch. I really had a good laugh! The dynamics at play were very entertaining, especially with Yuri and Twilight being wary of each other. And then there’s Yor, being her honest self. My favorite part about this episode is seeing Twilight’s mind in action. (As well as his meme-worthy expressions.) Loid isn’t the best spy for nothing — he instantly figured out Yuri’s secret Identity just by identifying his memorized script. It just goes to show how amazing he is with his spy and information skills.

That said, isn’t it funny how Twilight still hasn’t figured out Yor’s real job? I mean, Twilight has seen her fighting skills. (As well as Yuri seeing her covered in blood their entire childhood.) Maybe Yor’s genuine scatter-brain personality is the best disguise of all…? Or is it the fact that this fake-but-legal couple is each other’s blind spots? (O-ho-ho?) Their blush was so adorable and awkward, but it’s nothing compared to the ending of the episode.

Needless to say, Yuri’s dramatic outbursts were the funniest in this episode. Lesson learned: Don’t give the Briar siblings any alcohol. I understand that he is frustrated at Twilight for stealing away his sister, but it’s just so silly how Yuri loses it and even ends up with the accidental nickname. (I can’t decide which I like better: Loidy/Lottie or Loi-loi?) To prove their love, he asks Yor and Loid to kiss! I was squealing the entire time, and when the ending song appeared, I wanted to flip my desk.

My feelings are very much invested! The next episode of Spy x Family will air on Saturday, June 4, at 23:00 JST and will be available to watch with English subtitles on Crunchyroll, Netflix, Muse Asia, and Bilibili in select regions. Don’t forget to vote for it in our weekly polls if you enjoyed the episode!
