The previously announced Sword Art Online: Progressive -Scherzo of the Deep Night- anime film has received a key visual. The movie is set to premiere in Fall 2022. Studio A-1 Pictures (86 -Eighty Six-, Sword Art Online Series) is in charge of the animation.
Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Kirito) and Haruka Tomatsu (Asuna) will return as the main duo of the anime. Sword Art Online: Progressive -Scherzo of the Deep Night- will adapt volume 4 of Sword Art Online: Progressive light novel series, and it centers around the fifth floor of Aincrad and the guild called Laughing Coffin.
Sword Art Online: Progressive -Scherzo of the Deep Night- is the sequel to the movie Sword Art Online: Progressive -Aria of a Starless Night-, which premiered on October 30, 2021, nationwide in Japan. The first movie of the Progressive series topped the Box Office revenue during the opening weekend and earned over 349 million yen (~US$3.04 million). The anime film also aired in North America on December 3, 2021, and ranked 10th in theatres on the opening weekend, earning more than ~US$1.05 million. A-1 Pictures animated the movie, while Ayako Kono (Gate) directed it.

The movie is based on Reki Kawahara’s Sword Art Online: Progressive light novel series. ASCII Media Works started serializing it in October 2012. The novel is still ongoing and it currently has 8 volumes available.
