Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun by Studio Lerche will receive a season 2 of the anime, as well as another 4 episodes of the After-School Hanako-kun anime short series that finished airing in November 2023. These 4 episodes will premiere in the Fall 2024 anime season, while there is no release date for the 2nd season as of this writing.
Season 2 is thought to be a fresh reboot of the anime adaptation that first aired from January to March 2020. Season 1, directed by Masaomi Ando, was criticized for cutting out many parts from the source material. The anime series adapts AidaIro’s Jibaku Shonen Hanako-kun manga which debuted in Square Enix’s Monthly GFantasy magazine in June 2014 and has been collected into 20 volumes. Yen Press licenses the manga in English, announcing that the print version of Volume 19 will be released on December 12, 2023. After-School Hanako-kun was directed by Masaki Kitamura, with writing by Kazuma Nagatomo and music by Hiroshi Takaki.
Yen Press describes the story as:
“Hanako-san, Hanako-san… are you there?” At Kamome Academy, rumors abound about the school’s Seven Mysteries, one of which is Hanako-san. Said to occupy the third stall of the third floor girls’ bathroom in the old school building, Hanako-san grants any wish when summoned. Nene Yashiro, an occult-loving high school girl who dreams of romance, ventures into this haunted bathroom… but the Hanako-san she meets there is nothing like she imagined! Kamome Academy’s Hanako-san… is a boy!
The After-School Hanako-kun spin-off manga began serialization in 2018.
