The anime adaptation of Junji Ito’s Uzumaki, which was set to air this October, has been delayed once again. In a statement issued on the official Twitter account for the series, the production team states that they don’t want to deliver a mediocre product and that they are choosing to extend the production time to ensure the quality is as good as possible. The full statement, which was posted on June 27 but is dated to June 24, is available below, in both Japanese and English:
Studio Drive (Vlad Love) is animating the adaptation of the highly popular manga, with Hiroshi Nagahama (The Reflection) as the director. Studio Drive is currently working on the second season of To Your Eternity, as well as the recently announced spin-off and third season of KonoSuba. Production I.G. (USA) and Adult Swim are producing the Uzumaki anime. Last June, a short video with a sneak peek at the anime and a message from director Nagahama was shared with the fans:
This is not the first delay that the Uzumaki anime is facing: it was originally slated for 2021, but production issues slowed down the progress. The anime is expected to have 4 episodes. The voice cast includes Uki Satake as Kirie Goshima, Shinichiro Miki as Shuichi Saito, Mariya Ise as Azami Kurotami, while Mika Doi voices Yukie Saito. Takashi Matsuyama, Katsutoshi Matsuzaki, Wataru Hatano, Toshio Furukawa, and Ami Fukushima are also voicing characters in the Uzumaki anime.
The manga by Junji was first published in 1998. It consists of 3 volumes, with 19 chapters. Viz Media licensed the manga for the English market.
Uzumaki synopsis:
A mysterious spiral shape, Uzumaki, haunts the small Japanese coastal town. Citizens suddenly become attracted to spiral-shaped objects. Shuichi Saito’s father is one of them. He becomes increasingly obsessed with spirals – snails, whirlpools, as well as decorations on pottery. This by itself isn’t a huge problem, but something more sinister is lurking. When his dead body is found positioned in a spiral shape, the town must prepare for the worst…
