Dragon Maid S Episode 2 - Ilulu Steps Into the Light

Ilulu is back in episode 2 of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S, with a sort of a redemption arc. We also got more details about what actually happened to Kobayashi at the end of the last week’s episode. Spoilers ahead!

Many of us probably had a rough idea of the spell Ilulu cast on Kobayashi. And yeah, we were right, she “blessed” Kobayashi with a set of male reproductive organs. Surprisingly enough, Kobayashi handles the situation pretty well and her main concern is trying to hide it from Tohru and Kanna. But, nothing escapes Tohru’s keen eye and she notices it before it’s able to disappear. Of course, she offers to procreate, much to Kobayashi’s horror.

The situation resolves itself quickly enough but Kobayashi can’t stop thinking about Ilulu. She waits for her to appear outside of her workplace again, but Ilulu is nowhere to be seen. Kobayashi decides to take a stroll and finds her passed out in street, with a male dragon attacking her. She saves her and runs to a nearby park, where Ilulu opens up about her hate for humans. Kobayashi isn’t swayed by this and she consoles Ilulu.

However, the assassin follows them to the park and he attacks and hurts Kobayashi. Just as they thought the battle was lost, Tohru shows up and saves the day.

While Kobayashi recovers at home, Ilulu doesn’t leave her side. Soon, it’s decided that she’ll stay with Kobayashi’s little dragon family, but she first must learn to blend in with the human world. Thankfully (or not), Tohru is there to guide her.

Love and acceptance

Ilulu’s backstory is anything but happy. She lost her family to humans and was forced to abandon her human friends. She grew up lonely, wanting friends and not understanding the hate that surrounded her. When she saw what Kobayashi and Tohru had, she was intrigued. Although she went about it the wrong way, she was able to befriend Kobayashi. This random human offered her love and acceptance, as well as a family she never had.

It’s wonderful seeing themes like this in Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid. The series is usually light-hearted and fun, but sometimes it hits you right in the feels. And this episode manages to balance those two just right. It had just the right amount of humor and emotional moments that made you connect with the characters. It’ll be interesting to see how Ilulu adapts to the human world, and I can’t wait to see what she’ll bring to the story.

Episode 2 of Dragon Maid S was directed by Taichi Ogawa, who is best known for directing the 2nd Sound! Euphonium movie. Yuka Yamada once again wrote the screenplay, with Tatsuya Ishihara and late Yasuhiro Takemoto on the storyboard. Seiya Kumano (Violet Evergarden) and Kayo Hikiyama (K-ON!) served as animation directors for this episode.
