Fruits Basket: Prelude Is Coming to UK, US and Canada This Summer

Fruits Basket: Prelude movie is coming overseas, specifically to select theatres in the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States. The special event movie will be distributed by Crunchyroll, with select movie theaters in the United States and Canada screening the movie in both subtitle and dub formats on June 25, 28, and 29. The movie will also release in the United Kingdom, with the dubbed version only, on July 20.

Fruits Basket: Prelude premiered in Japan this February. During the opening weekend, it earned over 33 million yen. In addition to the release dates, Crunchyroll also revealed the trailer for Fruits Basket: Prelude in subtitled and dubbed versions:

The cast for both the original Japanese and the English dub includes:

  • Kyoko Honda – Miyuki Sawashiro/Lydia Mackay
  • Katsuya Honda – Yoshimasa Hosoya/J. Michael Tatum
  • Tohru Honda – Manaka Iwami/Laura Bailey
  • Kyo Soma – Yūma Uchida/Jerry Jewell

Crunchyroll describes the plot of the movie as:
Before there was Tohru and Kyo – there was Katsuya and Kyoko. Discover the turbulent beginning of Tohru’s mom’s dark past, and the man who breathed new hope into her. Watch the evolution of their love story and the birth of the Honda family, as this chapter completes the full adaptation of the heartwarming Fruits Basket story. 

Fruits Basket manga series by Natsuki Takaya was serialized in Hana to Yume magazine from 1998 to 2006. A sequel titled Fruits Basket Another was serialized from 2015 to 2020. A side story covering The Three Musketeers Arc came out in 2019, with a sequel in 2020.

The series also had 2 anime adaptations. The first one came out in 2001, but it didn’t cover the entire story (Studio DEEN). TMS Entertainment and 8 Pan co-produced the reboot, which started airing in 2019 and had 3 seasons in total, with over 60 episodes.
