The previously announced Gamera Rebirth anime has released a new key visual, as well as information on its synopsis. Studio ENGI is animating the series while Hiroyuki Seshita is directing it.
The official website of the series describes the plot as:
The last summer. Friends. And Kaiju–. In the summer of 1989, Boko, Joe, and Junichi, all sixth grade elementary school students, were having their last summer vacation. Each of them is worried about their future. Brody, the son of a US military commander, appears before the three of them and steals away the money they have saved together. Boko and his friends are furious and plan a plan to get their money back. As they are about to carry out the plan, the town is threatened. The kaiju Gyaos suddenly attacks Tokyo. The four are petrified in a town ruined by Gyaos. As Gyaos sets its sights on them, a huge kaiju appears. Its name is Gamera. This is the beginning of their “Summer of Kaiju.” Kaiju appear one after another, and Gamera fights back despite his wounds. The boys witness the legend.
The main cast for the Gamera Rebirth anime includes Hisako Kanemoto (Durarara!!, Bleach, Girls und Panzer, Assassination Classroom) as Boko, Subaru Kimura (Assassination Classroom, Doraemon, Zombie Land Saga, Jujutsu Kaisen) as Brody, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Sword Art Online, No Game No Life, Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaibai) as Joe, and Aki Toyosaki (K-On!, Beelzebub, Noragami, Dr. Stone) as Junichi.
Keisuke Ide will serve as the series’ assistant director and Atsushi Tamura is on the character designs. Meanwhile, Kenta Ihara, Hiroshi Seko, and Hiroyuki Seshita will be doing the series composition, with Ferdinando Patulli and Naoya Tanaka on production design. Netflix will be streaming the anime exclusively worldwide and the anime is listed with six episodes.
Gamera: Rebirth is based on the trilogy of Gamera films Shusuke Kaneko directed, namely Gamera: Guardian of the Universe (1995), Gamera 2: Attack of Legion (1996), and Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris (1999). The three films are also known as Heisei Gamera, named after the Japanese era in which these films were released.
The kaiju Gamera first appeared in the 1965 film Daikaiju Gamera (Gamera, the Giant Monster), which was directed by Noriaki Yuasa. The latest Gamera film is the 2006 film Chiisaki Yusha-tachi Gamera (Gamera the Brave). The Gamera franchise was aimed at competing with the popular Godzilla franchise.
