The upcoming Gamera: Rebirth anime revealed a teaser trailer, as well as a visual featuring the vampire bat-like pterosaur kaiju Gyaos. Netflix will be streaming the anime exclusively worldwide and the anime is listed with six episodes. More info will be also released at the upcoming AnimeJapan 2023 event.
More visuals will be revealed in the future, depicting the various kaiju Gamera has fought with. Gyaos first appeared in the 1967 Gamera film, Gamera vs. Gyaos.
Gamera: Rebirth is based on the trilogy of Gamera films Shusuke Kaneko directed, namely Gamera: Guardian of the Universe (1995), Gamera 2: Attack of Legion (1996), and Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris (1999). The three films are also known as Heisei Gamera, named after the Japanese era in these films were released.
“When I proposed my own concept for a new Gamera series , KADOKAWA already had a new project in the works, so I have high expectations for this one. I will continue to support the Gamera team as if I were a baseball commentator with experience as a team manager, until it wins the championship and is promoted again.”
Statement from director Shusuke Kaneko.
The kaiju Gamera first appeared in the 1965 film Daikaiju Gamera (Gamera, the Giant Monster), which was directed by Noriaki Yuasa. The latest Gamera film is the 2006 film Chiisaki Yusha-tachi Gamera (Gamera the Brave). The Gamera franchise was aimed at competing with the popular Godzilla franchise.
