Keanu Reeves' BRZRKR Anime Adaptation by Production I.G. Set to Have 2 Seasons

BRZRKR, an American comic created and co-written by Keanu Reeves and Matt Kindt, will be getting an anime adaptation by Production I.G. The anime will serve as a follow-up to the previously announced live-action adaptation and possibly expand on the universe the story is set in. The announcement was revealed at the ongoing San Diego Comic-Con, where the series had a panel. Ron Garney is illustrating the comic, while Bill Crabtree is the inker and colorist.

The BRZRKR anime spin-off will be released on Netflix and will have two seasons. Reeves will voice the main character Berzerker in the anime series. Netflix is also doing a live-action film adaptation of BRZRKR, first announced in March 2021. Reeves will also star in it and be involved in the film production.

Volume 1 cover of BRZRKR comic

BRZRKR was launched on March 3, 2021, by Boom! Studios. The comic was funded through a Kickstarter project, which eventually raised around US$1.45m. It has sold over 650,000 copies of the first issue. During an interview with Forbes, Reeves said that the story will discuss the implications of violence from the perspective of the characters in the series.

“The character struggles with this. He doesn’t like what he’s doing. He gets very emotional about the consequences of his actions, so it’s not at all dispassionate. That’s part of the tension that’s in it. Yes, people are having their arms ripped off, and there’s the celebratory, symphony aspect of it. But [in the story] we’re looking at the interests who want that violence, the people who profit from it. That’s the core of the story.”

Boom! Studios describes the plot as:
A WAR WITH NO END. The man known only as B. is half-mortal and half-God, cursed and compelled to violence…even at the sacrifice of his sanity. But after wandering the world for centuries, the Berzerker may have finally found a refuge – working for the U.S. government to fight the battles too violent and too dangerous for anyone else. In exchange, B. will be granted the one thing he desires – the truth about his endless blood-soaked existence…and how to end it.
