The upcoming Makoto Shinkai movie, Suzume no Tojimari, is getting an original novel adaptation, written by Shinkai himself. It will be released on August 24 and will be available for pre-order soon.
Shinkai’s two previous anime films Your Name and Weathering With You also received novel adaptations. Both of these titles were original works by Shinkai and have since been licensed in English by Yen Press.
Suzume no Tojimari was first announced in December 2021. A visual and a teaser trailer were announced in April this year. The film is set to premiere in Japan on November 11 this year. Masayoshi Tanaka is doing character designs, with Takumi Tanji serving as the art director. CoMix Wave Films is animating the movie.
Shinkai had already hinted about the post-apocalyptic nature of the film. In a 2020 interview with TV Asahi, he said that he started writing the script after the Japanese government announced the state of emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The official site describes the film as follows:
Doors of Disaster open across Japan, bringing misfortune. 17-year-old Suzume lives in a quiet town in the Kyushu region in Japan. The story begins when she meets a young man on a journey to discover all the doors. She follows him and finds an old door at an abandoned building in the mountains. As if drawn by something, she reaches out… This is the start of her journey across Japan to lock up the doors that bring disasters. Makoto Shinkai’s modern adventure and story about a girl’s freedom and growth sets off. (translated by ACN)
