Blurring the line between fiction and reality, the stars of this season’s runaway success, Aqua and Ruby from Oshi no Ko, have graced the cover of SPUR’s August 2023 edition with new artwork from the manga’s artist, Mengo Yokoyari. The glossy fashion magazine is devoted to womenswear fashion, similar to Elle or Vogue magazine—and now, Aquamarine and Ruby Hoshino are stepping out into the real world with their own fashion debut.
Chosen by SPUR magazine’s editor HORIE, Aquamarine and Ruby both appear in stylish black outfits, with their signature eye colors matched by their namesake jewels. In the announcement post for August 2023’s cover, HORIE described the creation process, stating that: “I choose Tiffany’s ring with large aquamarine for Aqua, and Dior Fine Jewelry earrings and necklaces with beautiful pink gradation for Ruby.”
The August edition of SPUR magazine will also contain a 6-page feature that includes dialogue between the manga’s creators, Aka Akasaka and Mengo Yokoyari.
Oshi no Ko’s manga began serialization in 2020 in the Weekly Young Jump magazine. The story focuses on the dark side of the entertainment industry, and is Aka Akasaka’s second manga after Kaguya-sama: Love is War. Yen Press licenses the series in English.
HIDIVE is simulcasting the anime with English subtitles and dubs every Wednesday. The platform describes the plot as:
Dr. Goro is reborn as the son of the young starlet Ai Hoshino after her delusional stalker murders him. Now, he wants to help his new mother rise to the top, but what can a child do about the dark underbelly of the entertainment industry?
The anime has been incredibly popular so far, topping our own Spring 2023 charts seven times in a row after its mid-April premiere. The opening song, “Idol” by YOASOBI has even gone on to top the Billboard GLOBAL charts.
