Gen Urobuchi created the original concept for the Psycho-Pass story. The first season premiered in 2012 and focused on Akane Tsunemori, an investigator who joins the police force as an Investigator focused on enforcing the Sybil system. The Sybil system presides over society and keeps track of everyone’s “psycho-pass” as a way to determine stress levels and the likeliness of committing crimes. The Inspectors whose psycho-pass goes negative can become Enforcers, and carry on with the job while being monitored. One such case is Shinya Kogami. The utopian system functions in Japan; but how well does it work in reality? Akane joins up with her coworkers to find out the truth. The cast from the anime are reprising their roles:
The second season aired in 2014 and it focused on Akane once again. Psycho-Pass: The Movie followed in 2015 and told the story of Shinya Kogami. The franchise went on a short break after that, only to be resurrected with a trilogy titled Sinners of the System. The three movies cover side stories:
Vengeance’s Horizon once again focused on Shinya Kogami. It also served as an introduction to the third season, which would premiere in 2019. The 8-episode season focused on new characters: Arata Shindo and Kei Mikhail Ignatov. Although the two can be seen on the visual for the movie, their voice actors are not listed in the cast information. The original characters still appeared in the background. The third season ended with a movie titled Psycho-Pass 3: First Inspector. In addition to the TV anime and movies, the franchise also spawned multiple manga and light novel adaptations.
