The new anime adaptation of Rurouni Kenshin has Soma Saito voicing the protagonist, Kenshin Himura (Himura Battousai), while Rie Takashi as Karou Kamiya, Yuma Uchida as Aoshi Shinomori and Saoriu Onishi as Megumi Takani. The anime is based on Nobuhiro Watsuki’s Rurouni Kenshin manga series, which was published in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1994 to 1999. The same publisher started serializing a sequel titled, Rurouni Kenshin: The Hokkaido Arc in 2017, but it was put on hiatus because the author was charged with possession of materials with child pornography.
An anime adaptation of the series was already made by studio Gallop and DEEN from 1996 to 1999, along with some OVAs and side stories. In 2013, the franchise started a live-action adaptation film, and it ended in 2021, with a total of 5 movies.
Viz Media licened the original Rurouni Kenshin manga series in English and describes the plot as:
One hundred and forty years ago in Kyoto, with the coming of the American “Black Ships,” there arose a warrior who, felling men with his bloodstained blade, gained the name Hitokiri, manslayer! His killer blade helped close the turbulent Bakumatsu era and slashed open the progressive age known as Meiji. Then he vanished, and with the flow of years, became legend.
