Spy X Family Episode 1 - Whimsical Father and Daughter

Spy X Family episode 1 is finally here! The highly anticipated romantic-comedy of the season has finally made its debut and it is hands down an adorable, funny, and a very enjoyable watch! Personally, I’ve been so excited for this one because the original material is very light-hearted. The thrill behind Twilight’s spy action is one thing, but Anya’s cuteness? That little girl won my heart instantly! What’s more, the wholesome vibe of the show is what makes this series beautiful at its core. If you’re looking for a light and wholesome watch this season, this is the one to look out for.

Spy X Family episode 1 begins with Twilight — a handsome, emotionless, master-of-disguise spy — whose mission brings him to become a father to a little orphan girl named Anya. What he doesn’t know is that Anya happens to be a Telepath! This one-of-a-kind situation leads to a lot of silly and hilarious shenanigans between them. From grocery shopping together to intense hide-and-seek games, hopeless studying, and the cherry on top, the full-blown villain hideout infiltration/extraction. (Anya got to live her spy show dreams!) It’s all a very amusing turn of events, one that ended much wholesome than it started out to be.

“A world without the cries of children, that’s what drove me into being a spy.”

The best thing about this episode by far is, of course, Anya’s character. She is such a ball of pure cuteness! Despite her unique telepathic abilities, she’s actually a sweet goofball. She’s easily the heart of the show, with her evident expressions and struggles making her really likable and loveable. What’s more, Twilight’s reaction and dedication to his mission (and in a way, to Anya) is an interesting and charming dynamic.

If you think about it, Anya’s orphan backstory and Twilight’s heroic-but-lonesome work is the most heartbreaking part of the show. By the end of the episode, however, it’s obvious that Twilight — the spy with no emotional attachment to anything or anyone — gains a special bond with Anya. (Although he may never admit it.) That touch of thoughtfulness on himself and towards Anya rounded up the story, making it a well-delivered and meaningful first episode.

I also can’t help but appreciate the amazing visuals — the design, environment, and all the little details are an absolute treat for my eyes. If you missed it, the series is actually being animated by two brilliant studios. We have WIT Studio, which produced the first three seasons of Attack on Titan, and CloverWorks, the studio behind My Dress-Up Darling last season. With these two powerhouses on board, Spy X Family definitely has the ability to step up their rom-com and action hype. I think the kidnapping and fight scenes were awesome, and I am totally fangirling about how badass Twilight was.

All in all, Spy X Family episode 1 is a wonderful premiere. It is a perfect blend of comedy, drama, and action. I personally had a good time watching it, especially with the smooth animation and wholesome story! The overall writing is very heartfelt, something I love in a good rom-com. In addition, the detail of its world-building is very nice. It’s very interesting, and I am super excited to see how the “Mom” comes into their family dynamic next week.

Spy x Family Episode 2 will air on Saturday, April 16, at 23:00 JST and will be available to watch with English subtitles on Crunchyroll and Netflix in select regions. It will also be released on Muse Asia’s Youtube for free at 23:00 GMT+8. However, in select regions, it will be on the channel for the first three hours only.

You can also check out Tatsuya Endo, the Spy X Family manga’s author, and his cute illustrations on his Twitter. After the premiere of the first episode, he drew a series of drawings of Anya who stayed up late to watch the season premiere. Check the illustration below:
