Sword Art Online Teases a New Movie in Production

The Sword Art Online franchise is teasing a new movie project that is in production. The announcement was made on the official Twitter/X account for the anime series following the first terrestrial broadcast of the Sword Art Online Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night. The new original movie project was announced in 2022.

Besides thanking viewers for watching the broadcast, the official announcement reads:
A completely new theatrical anime is in production. Please wait for further information!

Sword Art Online is a light novel series by Reki Kawahara that started in 2009. It spawned multiple TV anime adaptations, movies, manga, and light novels. The latest installment of the TV anime series was Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of Underworld: Part II, which aired in the summer of 2020. A movie titled Ordinal Scale also exists.

The Progressive movie series adapts the light novel of the same title, which tells the story of Sword Art Online’s first arc. The light novel written Reki Kawahara and illustrated by abec started serialization in 2012 in Dengeki G’s Magazine.

It was recently announced that the Ordinal Scale movie is getting an Ultra HD 4K release, slated for this February. Check out the announcement trailer:
