The Boy and the Heron theme song “Spinning Globe” by Kenshi Yonezu is featured in the new Korean trailer for the film, which premiered on October 25 in South Korea. Studio Ghibli’s most recent movie premiered in Japan earlier this year and it set to come to the US this December.
Yonezu created the theme song specifically for the movie, with his versatility shining in how “Spinning Globe”‘s emotional melody contrasts with the rocky “KICK BACK.” “KICK BACK” was recently certified Gold by the RIAA, marking the only Japanese-language song to receive the award. Studio Ghibli’s Kimitachi wa Do Ikiru ka premiered in theaters in July 2023. The movie was licensed as The Boy and the Heron by GKIDS. It has received critical acclaim from Japanese audiences so far, grossing over $56mn despite the movie’s notable lack of promotion. The Boy and the Heron has been honored internationally through early screenings, such as headlining the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The Boy and the Heron‘s English dubbed cast was recently announced and includes Ghibli returnees like Christian Bale who starred in Howl’s Moving Castle. Florence Pugh, Robert Pattinson, and many more.
Yonezu debuted as the Vocaloid music artist “Hachi” in 2009 before starting to release music under his real name in 2012. After introducing himself to many foreign fans through the My Hero Academia opening song, “Peace Sign,” he has since produced the theme songs for FINAL FANTASY XVI and Chainsaw Man. Further song credits include anime series like March Comes In Like a Lion, and movies in Fireworks (Uchiage Hanabi) and Children of the Sea.
GKIDS, which holds the North American rights to The Boy and the Heron, introduces the film:
A young boy named Mahito yearning for his mother ventures into a world shared by the living and the dead. There, death comes to an end, and life finds a new beginning. A semi-autobiographical fantasy about life, death, and creation, in tribute to friendship, from the mind of Hayao Miyazaki.
