Part 1 of The Ancient Magus’s Bride: The Boy from the West and the Knight of the Blue Storm OVA is now streaming on Crunchyroll. The first episode is a little over 22 minutes long and brings an all-new story set after the events of the first season. The episode came bundled with Volume 16 of the manga on September 10th, and 2 more episodes are coming in March and September 2022. Part 2 recently revealed a trailer as well.
Studio Kafka replaced WIT Studio, which previously animated season 1 of The Ancient Magus’ Bride and Those Awaiting a Star OVA. Although the difference in animation is noticeable, they still managed to deliver a good product. Kazuaki Terasawa directed the first episode, which also marks his directorial debut. Hirotaka Katou came back to do character designs, and so did the sound director Shouji Hata. Junichi Matsumoto also reprised his music composition role. Seiki Tamura was the art director, which is another new name for the franchise. Aya Takaha and Youko Yonaiyama signed the script. Takaha worked on season 1, while Yonaoiyama previously worked on Uma Musume: Pretty Derby script.
It’s also worth noting that The Boy from the West and the Knight of the Blue Storm was Studio Kafka’s first work. In a recent interview with Crunchyroll, studio founders (one of which is Terasawa himself) discussed the OVA. They stated that The Ancient Magus’s Bride author, Kore Yamazaki, made the draft for episodes, while also complimenting her storytelling.
Atsumi Tanezaki and Ryouta Takeuchi once again voiced Elias and Chise. Hiromi Igarashi joined as Gabriel, while Aoi Ichikawa voiced the mysterious knight.
The first episode follows Chise and Elias as they prepare for Chise’s first year at school. Silky and Ruth are there as well, and everything is peaceful. But, a storm is coming. Spriggan is investigating a mysterious occurrence in the forest. Gabriel, an innocent boy who just moved from London will find himself in the middle of it.
