The First Slam Dunk Film Grosses Over 6.7 Billion Yen, Secures First Place in 5 Weeks

The First Slam Dunk, the latest animation film in the popular franchise, has earned over ¥6.7 billion (≒$51.3 million) with 4.61 million viewers in the time since its December 3 premiere in Japan and January 3. The film managed to secure the first place in when it comes to number of visitors for five weeks in a row. During the last weekend, The First Slam Dunk grossed ¥362 million (≒$2.7 million) with 276 thousand moviegoers, according to Kyogo Tsushina’s report.

Studios Toei Animation and DandeLion Animation Studio animated the film based on Takehiko Inoue’s Slam Dunk manga, which was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump from October 1990 to June 1996 with a total of 31 volumes. The series surpassed 120 million circulating copies. The manga’s author is directing and writing the script for the adaptation.

Viz Media licensed the manga for English releases and all the volumes are published. The official website describes the plot of the first volume as:
