Akebi's Sailor Uniform Episode 2: First Day of School

Akebi’s Sailor Uniform episode 2 tackles Akebi’s first day at Roubai. There, she meets her new classmates, has a few embarrassing mishaps, but overall has a pretty good first day. Let’s talk about what went down in a spoiler-filled discussion!

Akebi’s naïve personality

Akebi’s Sailor Uniform episode 2 lends some more insight into just who Akebi is. It’s revealed that she has a rather naïve and way too trusting personality. However, this makes her a far more charming protagonist, and makes it incredibly easy to root for her.

The first moments of the episode double as character building for Akebi as well as exposition. Viewers get some insight into just how she’d become so attached to the idea of donning a sailor uniform as well as building on what we know about her. In her energetic enthusiasm, she also chooses to show off one of her skills in front of the class, accidentally showing off a little more than she’d bargained for.

Akebi’s lack of social skill is equal parts charming and cringey.

She also comes off as rather eccentric in this episode, and her lack of true social skill is highlighted in her interactions with her classmates. Time and time again, Kizaki has to interfere in her interactions before Akebi makes a fool out of herself by teetering right on the edge of cringey. Without Kizaki’s intervention, Akebi’s first day might not have gone as well as it did.

Akebi comes out of this episode as a bit ditsy, but her heart and good natured traits shine through. The episode further solidifies her as a character that always means well and is fully earnest and diligent in the pursuit of her goals. These are all traits that make her such an easy character to get behind and support, and ultimately make a great foundation for the show to stand on.

The girls at Roubei

What Akebi’s Sailor Uniform episode 2 does as well is introduce viewers to the girls at Roubei Academy. As was mentioned earlier, Kizaki cements herself as a solid friend to Akebi here. Throughout the episode, she clearly looks out for her, and given that it’s literally the first day they’ve met, huge props to Kizaki for that. However, there are other girls that get a few moments here and there throughout the episode.

There’s a few girls that get some small moments. Washio Hitomi is the only other girl in the class that viewers get to see give her introduction. The tall girl claims to want to join the volleyball club, which is something Akebi notes down. Kujou Tomono is a girl that Akebi gets to help when the steam from her soup fogs up her glasses. The small Tanigawa Rei is also highlighted here, being mentioned as someone who often gets top scores on mock exams.

However, the new girl that gets the most screentime here is Usagihara Touko. It’s sort of unclear what her deal is so far. She cheerfully engages with Akebi, but also almost gets her to make a fool of herself multiple times. Whether or not there’s some malicious intent there is a tad unclear. But in the end, Akebi seems to have a good impression of her, so perhaps we’ll get to see more from Touko in the future.

Touko almost gets Akebi into some super awkward situations.

There are a lot of girls at Roubei, and whether or not we’ll really get to know them all is unclear as of now. But given that Akebi has already memorized all of their names, there’s definitely potential for literally any of them to feature in an episode moving forward, and that promises some exciting potential for future interactions.

Akebi’s dad returns

Akebi’s Sailor Uniform episode 2 also introduces viewers to Akebi’s dad. She comes home to see him asleep, and is told that he wanted to see her in the sailor uniform. Later on in the evening, Akebi also gets to talk to her dad about her day at school. Most of the conversation is veiled behind music and animation, without words being spoken, but one can understand that the two share a very close and wholesome relationship.

It’s nice to see a well functioning family relationship in an anime

Really, the close knit family dynamic shown so far in the show is very nice to see. It’s not too often that an anime gets to show a fully functioning family completely, so it’s nice to see here. To see the dad this early on is a bit of a surprise too, as he definitely seemed like he wouldn’t show up until late into the season, if at all. As dads tend to do.

Overall, this second episode built upon what was established in Akebi’s Sailor Uniform’s pilot well. It further cements Akebi as an adorable, if a bit socially awkward, cinnamon roll. The show oozes charm, both in its characters and in its visuals. It’s been a fun start so far, and hopefully the show has more in store for its viewers in later episodes!

You can watch Akebi’s Sailor Uniform on Funimation and Crunchyroll. Episode 3 will air on January 23rd, 2022.
