According to a report released by Toyo Keizai, a Japanese business publisher, the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba franchise made a total of 1 trillion yen (~US$8.756 billion) in 2020. It is no secret that Demon Slayer became a highly successful media franchise after the release of the anime series, but making over 1 trillion yen is quite an achievement.
Even though Demon Slayer: Mugen Train became the highest-grossing anime movie, it only made 51.5 billion yen (~US$451 million). Where does the remaining ~950 billion yen come from? The lion’s share of the earnings came from the merchandising area. That includes all of the food tie-ins, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train tie-ins, coffee tie-ins, and sales of goods through most stores in Japan up to and including 2020. That alone earned an estimated 900 billion yen (~$US7.88 billion) for the Demon Slayer franchise.
The rest of the revenue comes from manga sales (44 billion yen – US$385 million), Unwavering Resolve Arc TV anime discs sales(500 million yen – US$4.37 million), and LiSA‘s single “Gurenge” sales (500 million yen – US$4.37 million) in 2020.
Demon Slayer will probably continue to grow as a media franchise. Not only a game has recently been released, but a second season of the anime also already started. As of now, the Demon Slayer Mugen Train arc is streaming every Sunday.
