The official YouTube channel of the Oshi no Ko anime unveiled a video featuring voice actress Rie Takahashi performing the anime’s opening theme “Idol” on Friday. This cover was teased during the Oshi no Ko stage at Jump Festa 2024.
Originally by YOASOBI, “Idol” hit the top spot on the Billboard Global charts last year, making it the first Japanese-language song to do so. It reached 100 million streams on Oricon and Billboard Japan in just five weeks, and the animated music video hit 100 million views in a month. The song was released on April 12, 2023, the same day the anime premiered while the English version of the song was out on May 26 of the same year.
Studio Doga Kobo (Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie) animated the first season of the anime and the second season is currently in production. A live-action drama and movie adaptation were also recently announced. Rie Takahashi voices Ai Hoshino, the legendary idol in the series.
The anime and live-action adaptations are based on the manga series written by Aka Akasaka (Kaguya-sama: Love is War) and illustrated by Mengo Yokari (Scum’s Wish). Shueisha’s Weekly Young Jump has been serializing the series since April 23, 2020, while Yen Press is licensing the manga in English and they describe the first volume as follows:
Gorou is a gynecologist and idol fan who’s in shock after his favorite star, Ai, announces an impromptu hiatus. Little does Gorou realize that he’s about to forge a bond with her that defies all common sense! Lies are an idol’s greatest weapon in this outrageous manga from Aka Akasaka (Kaguya-sama: Love is War) and Mengo Yokoyari (Scum’s Wish).
