Spy X Family Episode 2 - Meeting Yor Briar

Spy X Family episode 2 is finally here and the opening theme looks super amazing! How can it be so wholesome and epic at the same time?! The lively music, imaginative art style, vibrant colors, fluid animation, and that endearing sequence of Anya’s adventures — all of it make me totally in love with the anime even more. I honestly don’t think I’ll ever be skipping this opening from now on. (One cannot simply skip Anya.) In addition to the hype, we finally get to meet Yor Briar — the soon-to-be wife/mom! I think we can all agree that from beginning to end, this week’s episode was a lovely series of events, all leading up to what I think is the most iconic, silly, and romantic proposal in anime history ever.

The episode begins with Twilight trying to disguise his informant Franky as his pretend wife. It’s a weird sight that even Anya disapproves of. Although we don’t get to see much of Anya like in the first episode, all her scenes this week are just as memorable because of her cute expressions and one-liners. (And that head pat from Twilight.) In fact, she’s actually the one who pulls the strings on matchmaking Yor Briar and Loid Forger together. A secret spy and assassin together? I can just imagine Anya’s excitement, just like from her spy TV show!

Of course, the main highlight of the episode is the beautiful woman named Yor Briar (voiced by Saori Hayami.) Her character is very interesting — she is gentle and sweet on the outside but has some murderous thoughts on the inside! Her “Thorn Princess” assassination scene was badass, with a total femme fatale vibe! The duality of this woman is really something, and in the end, her thoughtfulness is the most charming thing about her. All she wants is to assure her brother that she’s fine and in a relationship, which is obviously not true … yet.

Aside from my fangirling energies for Yor, I also had a lot of fun watching Twilight/Loid struggle with his mission. (Gotta appreciate Franky for the support too.) My personal favorite of the episode was the animation when he took out 38 men in less than 10 seconds each. In addition, he arrives just in time for the party and wrongly introduces himself as the husband! (I honestly squealed.) And when he defended Yor? Plus that smooth tray save? From then on, I knew they were the perfect couple. In the end, Yor’s meanie co-worker only humiliated herself.

Without a doubt, the best part of Spy X Family episode 2 is that action-packed ending. It’s a hilarious and chaotic turn of events that I found very entertaining. I don’t even get Yor’s naivety that she buys that batting therapy (for someone who kills for a living at that), but she’s very pretty whenever she blushes! And then, the proposal — the proposal — was so incredibly cute! They said their vows with a grenade pin and the explosions in the background really made it all the more romantic. Even though it’s just camouflage, I am internally screaming with this week’s absurd but delightful developments.

So far, this rom-com anime has done a wonderful job in introducing each of the characters, making them as real and relatable as possible! I am genuinely so happy and I cannot wait to see these three together next week. For now, I’m glad to see the family picture finally complete!

In case you missed it, the full opening and closing theme songs have made their digital releases. +Tatsuya Endo, the manga’s author, posted a drawing in dedication to them. You can see his illustration for Official Hige Dandism below:
