Platinum End Episode 20 - Ending the Selection Process

Platinum End episode 20 sees Mirai and friends deal with the aftermath of Susumu getting shot! Meanwhile, Yoneda learns a secret that recontextualizes everything that’s happened in the show so far. Let’s talk about just what went down in a spoiler-filled discussion.

Goodbye, Susumu

Platinum End episode 20 does not start off on a happy note, as Yoneda catches Susumu and uses a white arrow on him, claiming that he’s already gone. In the chaos of the snipers going off, the rest of the God candidates use their wings in order to get out there faster than the human eye can see.

Yoneda uses his white arrow on Susumu.

Susumu’s death is truly sad and feels like some real wasted potential. His introduction came right after Metropoliman’s death, and it feels like he died before he could do anything truly significant. Yes, he introduced the existence of God candidates to the world. However, as big as that moment was, it felt like just the beginning. It felt like a moment that would kick off the next chapter of the story. And while it did just that, to see Susumu perish in this episode feels a bit disappointing, as now, he won’t ever get to deliver on that potential he had.

It’s at this point that Platinum End viewers must bid goodbye to Susumu. He did a great job of spicing up the show at its lowest point and steered its story in more interesting ventures.

The truth about Nasse

Platinum End episode 20 also features an interesting discussion between Yoneda and Ogaro. Threatening to use his white arrow on Nakaumi, Yoneda forces Ogaro to reveal to him who the special rank angel among the remaining God candidates is. She tells him that it’s Nasse, and she also unveils a juicy truth that could mark a huge turning point for the show.

Ogaro reveals that Nasse has a special power that allows her to interact with objects in the human world. She remarks that Nasse doesn’t seem to realize that it’s a unique power at all. This speaks to the viewing audience as well, because surely most people out there would not have been able to catch onto this. It seems like such a mundane detail. However, when you think back after learning this, you realize that none of the other angels have ever interacted with people or objects. Furthermore, the only reason Mirai is alive today is because of this special power; had it been any other angel with Mirai then, he would not be alive at this point.

The truth about Nasse is revealed.

It is reveals like this that make shows quite enjoyable to watch. You’re forced to reflect on everything you’ve seen so far, your views now changed by this new information. While it’s clear to see why this is a big moment looking back, questions now arise as to how this may affect the show’s story moving forward.

Shady goings on

While all this goes on, there are little details that imply things are being set up in the background of Platinum End. One of the policemen allied with Mirai gets shot with a red arrow by his partner. Meanwhile, Mirai and his friends move into a more secure facility and begin to think about their stances on becoming God. Temari is one of the ones adamant that Yoneda should be stopped. However, Saki and Mirai are more doubtful.

There are some shady things going on in the background.

The dominos have been set up quite nicely so far. With only a few episodes left for the story to wrap up, it will be sooner rather than later to see them get knocked down.

Platinum End is streaming on Crunchyroll and Funimation. Episode 21 will air on March 4th, 2022.
