r/Anime Announces 2021 Anime Awards Winners

The popular anime-themed subreddit r/Anime announced the winners of its 2021 Anime Awards. The votes were divided between public votes and jury votes, and as the subreddit is a gathering place for many fans the results were quite interesting. Voting categories were divided into 4 groups – main, based on the genre, character categories, and production.

The main group included the most “important” winners of the awards and it’s important to note that the jury and the public vote had different opinions when it came to all 4 of the categories:

  • Anime of the Year: Jury – Sonny Boy; Public – Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation
  • Movie of the Year: Jury – Pompo: The Cinéphile; Public – Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Mugen Train
  • Short Series of the Year: Jury – Yoru no Kuni; Public – Star Wars: Visions
  • Short Film of the Year: Jury – Heikousen (Eve & suis MV); Public – HOLOLIVE ALTERNATIVE Teaser PVs

As far as the production category goes, Sonny Boy won big when it came to jury votes, while Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation won the hearts of the public:

  • Best Animation: Jury – Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S; Public – Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation
  • Best Background Art: Jury – Sonny Boy; Public – Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation
  • Best Character Design: Jury – Sonny Boy; Public – ODD TAXI
  • Best Cinematography: Jury – SSSS.DYNAZENON; Public – Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation
  • Best OST: Jury – Sonny Boy; Public – Attack on Titan Final Season Part 1
  • Best Voice Acting: Jury – Natsuki Hanae as Vanitas (The Case Study of Vanitas); Public – Yuki Kaji as Eren Jeager (Attack on Titan)
  • Best OP: Jury – “Cinderella” by CIDERGIRL (Komi Can’t Communicate); Public – “ODD TAXI” by Punpee and Skirt (ODD TAXI)
  • Best ED: Jury – “Yasashii Suisei” by Yoasobi (Beastars 2); Public: “Give It Back” by Co shu Nie (Jujutsu Kaisen)

This 2021 r/Anime Awards took a slightly different approach when it came to Character Awards. Instead of the best protagonist award, the subreddit went with a “Best Character in a Drama” category in which Shinji Ikari (jury vote) and Eren Jeager (public vote) won. A special category for characters in a comedy was also available, with Renge Miyauchi from Non Non Biyori (jury) and Gintoki Sakata (public) winning. Best Support Character Award went to Ryuuji Ayakawa from Blue Period (jury vote) and Ruijerd Sperdia from Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation (public vote). According to the jury, Fruits Basket: The Final had the best cast assembly, while the public chose Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation once again.

As always, the genre categories were colorful and even had the jury and the public agree on the winner in one instance:

  • Best Action: Jury – SSSS.DYNAZENON; Public – Jujutsu Kaisen
  • Best Adventure: Jury and Public – Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation
  • Best Comedy: Jury – Zombie Land Saga Revnge; Public – Komi Can’t Communicate
  • Best Drama: Jury – NOMAD: Megalo Box 2; Public – Violet Evergarden Movie
  • Best Romance: Jury – Duke of Death and His Maid; Public – Horimiya
  • Best Slice-of-Life: Jury – Non Non Biyori: Nonstop; Public – Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S
  • Best Suspense: Jury – Sonny Boy; Public – ODD TAXI
