Mamoru Hosoda’s (“Summer Wars”, “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time”) “Belle” and the “Tokyo Revengers” live-action film based on Ken Wakui’s manga earned over 2 billion yen insanely fast. Both of the movies premiered in July 2021, in Japan.
“Belle” sold over 1.69 million tickets in just 10 days since its premiere, earning more than 2.4 billion yen (~$21.8 million). The full Japanese title of the film is “Ryū to Sobakasu no Hime”. Not only was the film ranked at 1st place in the Japanese box office, but it also sold over 600 thousand tickets in the first three days!

Suzu Naito is a 17-year-old girl who lives with her father in the countryside. Suzu loved singing with her mother, but after her mother died it became too painful. One A 17-year-old high school girl, Suzu, who lost her mother in an accident when she was young. She lives with her father in a depopulated rural town of Kochi and learns about the virtual world “<U>” on the Internet. She joins <U> using an avatar named Belle, whose singing attracts the people worldwide. One day a mysterious dragon-like creature appears in front of her.

On the other hand, we have a live-action adaptation of Ken Wakui’s “Tokyo Revengers” manga. The “Tokyo Revengers” live-action sold more than 1.66 million tickets in just 17 days, earning over 2.25 billion yen (~$20.4 million). The film is also tied with “Rurouni Kenshin: The Final” for reaching the yen milestone among live-action Japanese films in 2021.
