Top 10 Best Anime Releases to Watch in Summer 2023

As we get closer to the Summer 2023 anime season, we can already tell there will be a lot of great shows to watch. While the most hype titles are definitely the sequels, there are also some interesting new shows to keep an eye on. The list is subjective and we will have a more extensive one when we get closer to the season, but here are the top 10 best anime releases you should check out for the Summer 2023 anime season and their latest information and trailers (in no particular order).

JUJUTSU KAISEN Season 2

The first anime on the best Summer 2023 watch list is JUJUTSU KAISEN Season 2. The sorcerers are returning in a animation style with a change in director from Sunghoo Park to Shota Goshozono. It has been over 2 years since season 1 ended back in March 2021. The sequel will run for 2 consecutive cours, with the first one focusing on Satoru Gojo’s early days with Suguru Geto and Toji Fushiguro. They’ve also shared character designs for several of the characters when they were young, and you can watch the trailer:

JUJUTSU KAISEN Season 2 – Anime Trailer

Studio MAPPA, which animated both the 24-episode first season and movie for the franchise, is back to animate JUJUTSU KAISEN Season 2. Crunchyroll describes the story:
Yuji Itadori is a boy with tremendous physical strength, though he lives a completely ordinary high school life. One day, to save a classmate who has been attacked by curses, he eats the finger of Ryomen Sukuna, taking the curse into his own soul. From then on, he shares one body with Ryomen Sukuna. Guided by the most powerful of sorcerers, Satoru Gojo, Itadori is admitted to Tokyo Jujutsu High School, an organization that fights the curses… and thus begins the heroic tale of a boy who became a curse to exorcise a curse, a life from which he could never turn back.

BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War Arc Part 2: The Separation

Moving on, BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War Arc Part 2: The Separation is another anime that will definitely be one of the best to watch in the Summer 2023 anime season. The first part had great production quality and it dominated in our weekly poll. Tite Kubo also said in an interview that the 2nd part will animate a new fight that wasn’t drawn in the manga, and you can watch the teaser for it below:

BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War Part 2 – Anime Trailer

Studio Pierrot returned to animate after previously producing the original TV anime adaptation of Tite Kubo’s BLEACH manga, which aired between October 2004 and March 2012 with a total of 366 episodes. VIZ Media licensed it in English, and they describe the BLEACH 2022 (Thousand-Year Blood War) story:

The peace is suddenly broken when warning sirens blare through the Soul Society. Residents there are disappearing without a trace and nobody knows who’s behind it, meanwhile, a dark shadow is also extending itself toward Ichigo and his friends in Karakura Town…

Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead

The first new anime I hope will live up to be one of the best to watch in Summer 2023 is definitely Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead. Adapting the seinen manga with story from the creator of Alice in Borderland Haro Aso, the story will look to offer an interesting new zombie survival story. The vibe I get from the visual and trailer is kind of similar to Call of the Night (although that was vampires), and you can check out the trailer:

Studio BUG FILMS is animating, with Kazuki Kawagoe as the director. VIZ Media describes the story:
In a trash-filled apartment, 24-year-old Akira Tendo watches a zombie movie with lifeless, envious eyes. After spending three hard years at an exploitative corporation in Japan, his spirit is broken. He can’t even muster the courage to confess his feelings to his beautiful co-worker Ohtori. Then one morning, he stumbles upon his landlord eating lunch—which happens to be another tenant! The whole city’s swarming with zombies, and even though he’s running for his life, Akira has never felt more alive!

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2

The next on the best Summer 2023 anime watch list is another highly anticipated sequel, Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2. Coming a year and a half after its season 1 finale in December 2021, Rudy will continue his journey after Eris left. You can watch the trailer for the new season:

Studio Bind is returning to animate. Crunchyroll streams the anime, and they describe the story:

Coming in as the first romcom on the best Summer 2023 anime watch list, Horimiya -piece- will be adapting material that wasn’t in the original anime from 2021. You can watch the trailer:

Studio CloverWorks is returning to animate, with Masashi Ishihama returning as the director. Crunchyroll is streaming the first anime season, and they describe the story:
When the popular Hori and the gloomy Miyamura meet, they reveal another side of themselves. Could this be the start of something new?

Another new anime that could be one of the best to watch in Summer 2023 is Liar Liar, which will probably remind everyone of No Game No Life. The protagonist transfers to a school where everything is sorted through games, and he immediately defeats the strongest student? Yep, sounds like something that could happen to Sora and Shiro. Hopefully the ecchi aspect isn’t too forced. You can watch the trailer:

Yen Press licensed the light novel in English, and they describe the story:

Masamune-kun’s Revenge R (Season 2)

The 2nd romcom candidate on the best Summer 2023 anime watch list is Masamune-kun’s Revenge R (Season 2). Masamune’s revenge plot on Aki will be continuing after over 6 years since the first season ended back in March 2017, and fans have waited quite a while. It was originally scheduled for April, but ended up getting delayed. You can watch the trailer for the new season:

Studio SILVER LINK is returning to animate Crunchyroll is streaming the first season, and they describe the story:

Another shonen anime on the best Summer 2023 watch list is Bungo Stray Dogs Season 5, which is coming back after only a single season break since season 4 ended in March. The sequel was announced immediately after the finale, and you can watch the trailer:

Studio Bones is returning to animate, and season 5 will begin with the finale of Bungo Stray Dogs Volume 18/the beginning of Volume 19 of the manga. Yen Press describes the story:
Scattered and alone, the members of the Armed Detective Agency disappear one by one as Kamui, the leader of the Decay of the Angel, seeks to eliminate them once and for all! But Atsushi and the others aren’t out of the fight just yet. Rurouni Kenshin 2023

Coming as a remake of the 1996 anime, Rurouni Kenshin 2023 is another shonen anime on the best Summer 2023 watch list. It has been almost 25 years since the original ended in September 1998, and Kenshin’s adventure will be shown again in modern animation by studio LIDENFILMS. You can watch the latest trailer:

Viz Media licensed the manga in English, and they describes the story:
One hundred and forty years ago in Kyoto, with the coming of the American “Black Ships,” there arose a warrior who, felling men with his bloodstained blade, gained the name Hitokiri, manslayer! Rent-a-Girlfriend Season 3

While the MC’s development has put off many, Rent-a-Girlfriend Season 3 is also deserving of being on the best Summer 2023 anime watch list as another romcom. Its girls have been the main selling point since the start, and the 3rd season will be introducing a new one – Mini Yaemori. Watch the trailer for the new season:
